Dogwerx International Capital Corporation made conversation with the Chandigarh International Airport to bring forward their proposal and start charter flights from Chandigarh to Canada. They have got a nod from the concerned officials and once the plan is manifested, it will bring a great relief to the Indian Diaspora in Canada. Moreover, it will facilitate convenient air travel from Canada to Chandigarh for them.

Six years have passed since the inauguration of the Chandigarh International airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015. The airport has yet not seen any international flight operations to Canada from here. The airport carries just two international flight operations as of now. The two destinations covered from here are Dubai and Sharjah. Direct charter flights are proposed by the Canadian firm from Chandigarh international airport to Vancouver and Toronto. Flypop airlines were another firm that had earlier proposed the start of direct charter flights from Chandigarh to London.

Rakesh Ranjan Sahay, the Chief executive Officer (CEO) of Chandigarh International Airport has said, “The Canada based company has approached us for starting charter flights for the two cities of Canada. We have given them a go-ahead and are now waiting for the final nod. Once the plan takes off, it will come as a huge relief to the Punjabi Diaspora in Canada.” He also conversed about how these flight operations will be carried out. There initially will be seasonal flights for the first three months on a 200 seater aircraft. With time, it would be reviewed and after ascertaining the response from the public and passengers, changes will be made in the capacity and frequency of these flights.

Mr. R.R. Sahay, while talking about flights to London, said that a meeting had been convened by the authorities to discuss starting the flight operations from Chandigarh to Heathrow and Birmingham. Member of the Parliament from Chandigarh, Kiron Kher has also been bolstering her support to begin the international flights to the United Kingdom and Canada from Chandigarh.

Six years have slipped by since the inauguration of the Chandigarh International Airport and it’s yet to see an international flight operation to Canada or the United Kingdom. The two international flights that operate from here too have been thwarted many times in the past during the years of covid-19 pandemic. Canada to India flights are one of the highly demanded flights and most of the passengers who seek to book these flights are predominantly Punjabi expatriates.

Sanjeev Vashisht, a member of Chandigarh International Airport Advisory Committee, has said, “We have been trying for more international flights, even though a case is pending in the Punjab and Haryana high court regarding this. The international airport was built for the promotion of trade, which is possible only through connectivity to multiple parts of the world, along with a wide domestic network,” he said.

In 2021, cargo facilities were launched in the month of November from the Chandigarh International Airport though still have been shelved as an approval from the Airport Authority of India is eagerly awaited.
